Attempted Camouflage
We got to see him turn from green
(on the floor of the carport)
to brown in James' hand. |
While cleaning out the carport, we found a little lizard and I attempted to catch it for the boys. Before I could get it, Pirate caught (read: attacked) it and threw it a few feet away.
The lizard landed on its back and stayed there for several seconds. Bo and I assumed it was dead, but it opened its eyes and was still moving... barely.
His nearly motionless body allowed me to easily "catch" it... and it also allowed each of the boys to "catch" it as well... sheer victory in their minds. And what do you know? He didn't try to jump out of their hands either! Clearly, this is how all lizards react to being caught and held.
James: "Next time we'll let Pirate do all the work again. We'll let him catch the lizard so it will get scared and lie down on its back so we can catch him and keep him."
| I'm a good dog, yes? |
We didn't let James keep the "weezer," as Leyson calls it, knowing that this poor creature was minutes away from entering lizard heaven, so James "released him to the wild..." except that when he put him down on the sidewalk he didn't run into the bushes.
James saw this as a great reason to keep him as a pet.
So, we did what every great parent would do when teaching kids about injuries and death... and murder (bad Pirate)... we distracted James, threw the lizard into the bushes and exclaimed, "Wow! He ran in those bushes fast! Let's go find some more lizards!"
| Sending "Weezer" off into the wild. |
| We found another "weezer" inside a cardboard box. |
| The lizard jumped out of the box and scared Leyson, who then couldn't stop laughing. |
| On the hunt again... |
| "Wook for weezers in weaves." (Leyson) |
| To find a lizard, you gotta think like a lizard. |
| Daddy found another one in the carport! |
| I found a Weeson! |
